My Ball & Chain

My blogging pencil has become a little blunt; sorry about the recent lack of blogging and gaps between posts. I know, I know, The Free Download Series isn't even half-way through, but I'm having to call it off just for a moment. I hate to see the blog age, with less input from both you readers and myself, but I'm really trying to nail my second-year exams, and then I'm off to a little place called Paris.

Until this task labelled "revision" has been ticked off, I've really got to shut up shop and get my head down to some serious studying. So until I'm free of this academic ball-and-chain, I'll bid thee farewell.

A bientôt!

St. Vincent & David Byrne: Who

St. VincentDavid Byrne's insanely catchy song "Who" has been engaging with my brain in a wonderful dance all night. Probably my most cherished guilty pleasure, St. Vincent's eclectic, electric and simply beautiful music is given a refreshing twist with the sleek vocals of Talking Heads' former frontman.

This free download is only the start, however. As the first track to a whole album full of the duo, Love This Giant is an album I've been missing off my radar for almost a year.

If you're like me and this is the first you've heard of it too, feel free to get the taster yourself and download "Who" from the bottom of St. Vincent's website here.

P.S. You can also get "Surgeon", from her second album "Strange Mercy" for free too - go directly to the page here.

Pete Roe: Midnight:Mystery

The wonderfully-bearded, musically-talented and happy chappy Pete Roe is kindly giving away the double a-side "Midnight:Mystery" (Further into Midnight and A Strange Kind of Mystery in the Air - that's two tracks, folks!) to coincide with the release of his debut album Our Beloved Bubble this week.

No stranger to the live folk scene, notably as one of Laura Marling's bandmembers, he's definitely one to watch this year. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for his sterling, heartfelt, foot-tapping music - his album tour may be coming to a town near you soon too!

To get another lovely present from The Free Download Series, head on over to Pete Roe's website here and sign up to his mailing list. Simple as that!

Bear's Den: Agape

Bear's Den, formerly known as Cherbourg, are making their way up. Having seen them support Matt Corby last year, I know first hand how powerful their songs can be, and with such a distinctive voice and lyrics, it's a song you'll take a long while to forget.

To get your third installment of The Free Download Series, head over to their Music Glue page here and snap up another lovely freebie!

Nathaniel Rateliff: Laughing

A real diamond among the pack, Nathaniel Rateliff has been stealing the hearts of everyone, everywhere with his album In Memory Of Loss; from the mournful, delicate tracks to the upbeat, getting-on-with-life mood, tinted by the memory of his brother, it's a masterpiece of music.

So it comes as a wide-eyed surprise to find another track sitting pretty at the top of his website, and yet it's really just another wondrous gift from the gentleman who makes music for music, not fame. I doubt my words can do much justice, so all I'm going to say is that "Laughing" is a truly happy, rolling-summer track. Listen to it, drink up its goodness.

To get the second track from The Free Download Series, simply click along to the website, and follow the instructions under his banner. Thank you, Mister Rateliff.
